Unit Types Explained

Why unit types matter more than names

3 Kingdoms Online Remastered (Chinese title 三國鼎立Online Remastered, Steam AppID 4770830) is a free-to-play turn-based tactical MMO by Chinesegamer, released on Steam on 11 August 2026. It is online multiplayer, Steam-only, with Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese UI only (no English interface). Expect 15v15 boards, ten unit types, 27 terrains, remastered portraits, AI auto-battle, nation war, and campaigns such as Hulao Pass, Guandu, Changban Bridge, and Red Cliffs.

Officers inherit a foundation class that shapes movement, matchups, and objective jobs. Learn the ten types before memorizing every portrait. Pair this page with the interactive Unit Counter Tool and terrain notes on Terrain.

Infantry (步兵)

The reliable wall. Hold gates, protect medics, and contest stairs. Infantry are the backbone of Beginner Builds and defense modules in Nation War. They suffer when stranded on tiles that shred their effectiveness—check Terrain Reference.

Cavalry (騎兵)

Flank authority and punish tools against exposed backlines. Devastating on open approaches, awkward on crowded bridges like Changban. Do not first-turn charge spear forests.

Archers (弓兵)

Lane pressure and chip. Need pockets and peel. Humans in PvP will dive them—see PvP Builds.

Light infantry (輕裝兵)

Mobile skirmishers for raids, peel, and punishing slow setups. Excellent answer pieces when enemy songstresses or strategists overextend.

Strategists (謀士)

Skill-centric tempo. Win turns by disabling clumps and shaping engagements. Vulnerable if left without a front line.

Medics (藥師)

Sustain core. Hua Tuo (華佗) is the headline launch healer when eligible—Launch Rewards. Position behind anchors; never open them on a primary charge tile under Auto-Battle without supervision.

Engineers (工兵)

Objective and fortification specialists. Mandatory mental slot for sieges and certain campaign goals on Campaigns.

Taoists (道士)

Mystical control and flexible pressure. Pair with maps that reward skill timing rather than pure physical smashing.

Songstresses (歌妓)

Buff/debuff performance units. Huge swing potential, high grief potential if AI walks them forward. Micro matters.

Barbarians (蠻兵)

Shock and brutal frontal power. Great for breaking hesitating lines; risky if they over-pursue into traps.

The ten unit types are infantry (步兵), cavalry (騎兵), archers (弓兵), light infantry (輕裝兵), strategists (謀士), medics (藥師), engineers (工兵), taoists (道士), songstresses (歌妓), and barbarians (蠻兵).

Building a balanced ten-type mindset

You will not field all ten every fight, but your account should eventually understand each job. Use free Inoti to fill gaps. Align faction cosmetics later via Factions and Faction Comps.

Practice drills

  1. Name the role of each officer in your war twelve.
  2. Swap one unit to answer a stated threat using the counter tool.
  3. Replay a Hulao attempt focusing only on healer safety.
  4. Replay a wide room focusing only on cavalry timing.
  5. Read How to Play if turn economy still feels fuzzy.

Class literacy turns portrait collecting into actual generalship.

Matchup narratives worth memorizing

Cavalry punish unprotected archers and songstresses, but stall when infantry and spears own the approach. Archers punish slow clumps that refuse to close, but collapse if light infantry reaches their pocket. Strategists love clustered egos. Engineers look useless in deathmatch screenshots and decisive in gate rulesets. Medics look optional until your first contested Guandu wipe. Barbarians win hesitation and lose discipline contests.

Training card method

Make ten flashcards—one per type—with a single sentence job and a single sentence failure mode. Quiz yourself before queueing. Then open the Unit Counter Tool and confirm your gut. This is faster than rereading patch rumors every night.

Deployment grammar

Speak deployments as sentences: infantry holds west stair, medic behind west stair, archer covers west stair, cavalry waits east pocket. If you cannot say the sentence, you are not ready to auto-battle the map.
